School History

Opened in the fall of 2004, Martin Luther King, Jr. Early Childhood Center was one of the first facilities in Houston ISD specifically designed to serve pre-kindergarten students.  From the beginning, our campus has been committed to providing young learners with an environment that is engaging, joyful, and developmentally appropriate.

We take pride in being a worksheet free, hands-on learning school where students grow through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences.  Just as important, we prioritize social-emotional development, helping children build confidence, independence, and strong interpersonal skills from the very start.

The school was founded under the leadership of Ms. Gabrielle Coleman, who served as principal for 13 years.  Her vision was clear:  create a space where early learners are nurtured, challenged, and celebrated-without the pressure of worksheets.  Her commitment to hands-on instruction and emotional growth continues to shape our campus culture today.

Named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. our school proudly upholds the values he lived and died for-peace, equity, and the power of education to build a better future.
